Ejercicios hacia el alivio places the audience inside Rocío Molina’s process of research. Together with percussionist José Manuel Ramos «Oruco», the dancer turns the stage into a laboratory where movement is built and reshaped in front of the spectator. The body, the rhythm, the effort and repetition serve to explore different forms of tension and release. The piece also looks at the relationship with the earth, the need to begin again, and the way a rigorous technique can become a space of freedom. Rather than setting a fixed choreography, Molina shares the state of searching from which her new creations are born.
Rocío Molina
Rocío Molina, born in Málaga in 1984, is an iconoclastic choreographer and dancer who has forged a language of her own, grounded in a reinvented tradition of flamenco that honours its roots while embracing the avant-garde. Radically free, she brings together technical virtuosity, contemporary research and conceptual risk in her pieces. Unafraid to forge alliances with other disciplines and artists, her choreographies are singular stage events drawing on ideas and cultural forms ranging from film to literature, philosophy and painting. Her work has been presented at venues such as the New York City Center, the Barbican in London, the Festival d’Avignon, Tanz im August and the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. She received the Premio Nacional de Danza in 2010 and, among other honours, the UK National Dance Award, the Silver Lion of the Venice Biennale and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
One of the Spanish creators with the greatest international reach. Her artistic search has been recognised with major honours, including the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts from the Ministerio de Cultura in 2022 and the prestigious Silver Lion for Dance of the Venice Biennale, as well as the Premio de Danza Positano, the Premio Nacional de Danza in 2010, the UK National Dance Award in 2019 and 2016, four Max Awards, and the 2023 Premio Talía for best performer for Vuelta a Uno. Her work has been seen on some of the world’s most important stages, from the Barbican Centre in London, the New York City Center, the Festival d’Avignon, the Esplanade in Singapore, the Tanz im August Festival in Berlin, the SPAF Festival in Seoul, the Stanislavsky Theatre in Moscow, the National Theatre of Taiwan, the Dansens Hus in Oslo and Stockholm, the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris and the Bunkamura in Tokyo.
