Mario Bermúdez and Catherine Coury, Co-Founders and Co-Artistic Directors of Marcat Dance, are experienced and passionate teachers who work with students of all levels, from young adolescents to leading professionals in renowned schools and international dance companies. On February 25, 26, and 27, 2026, they will lead a three-day workshop consisting of 15 hours of movement research and technique, developed in dialogue with the island of Lanzarote’s extraordinary natural spaces that will host the program: Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, and Islote Fermina.
The workshop will be divided into three classes:
Gaga People
Led by Catherine Coury
Gaga is the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin. Gaga classes provide a framework for participants to connect with their bodies and imaginations, experience physical sensations, improve flexibility and stamina, cultivate agility and explosive power, and enjoy the pleasure of movement within a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Throughout the class, participants are guided through a series of evocative instructions designed to deepen awareness and amplify sensation. Rather than moving from one prompt to the next, information is layered, building toward a multisensory and physically challenging experience.
Marcat Dance Research
Led by Mario Bermúdez
This class focuses on grounding the body to develop elasticity, strength, and release, allowing energy to flow freely between internal and external expansion. Through guided improvisation drawn from Marcat Dance’s research practices, dancers explore shifting movement qualities, dynamic textures, and musicality. Physical and vocal play encourage participants to follow inner impulses while remaining attentive to themselves and the group. The class fosters awareness, confidence, and individuality, inviting dancers to discover both their vulnerabilities and the light they carry within.
Marcat Dance Repertory
Led by Mario Bermúdez and Catherine Coury
Participants will learn award-winning choreographic works by Mario Bermúdez that have been performed internationally. Each piece embodies a distinct movement vocabulary, original music, and its own imaginative world. In addition to learning the choreography, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into the creative processes behind the works.
Marcat Dance will also perform on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at the Jameos del Agua auditorium with their piece “Afines”.
Marcat Dance is the artistic home of Mario Bermúdez, the multi-award-winning Spanish choreographer, and American dancer Catherine Coury, co-director of the company. Their base is located in the rural surroundings of Vilches, Jaén, where the company develops each creation through creativity and movement, without forgetting another fundamental pillar: the training they provide around the world. Marcat Dance believes in the power of imagination, in committing to creativity, and in the continuous exploration of the body’s dynamics. The group connects with the human spirit and finds inspiration in diverse cultures, rituals, and landscapes from around the globe.
Since its founding in 2016, the company has performed internationally and shared its teachings throughout the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They have appeared at festivals such as Madrid en Danza, Anfitrión, and Itálica in Spain, as well as Jacob’s Pillow (USA), Vanguard Body (China), Yokohama Collection (Japan), and the Choreography Center La Licorera in Cali (Colombia), among others.
Their numerous productions have been recognized with awards such as “Best Show of the Year” (Lorca Awards 2022, PAD Awards 2021 and 2020), “Best Original Music” (PAD Awards 2020), “Best Male and Female Performance” (Lorca Awards 2022, PAD Awards 2021), “Best Choreography” (Escenarios de Sevilla Awards 2019), and they were finalists in three categories at the MAX Awards 2020. They have also received first prize in choreography at four international choreography competitions (2016–2019).
In addition to his creations with Marcat Dance, Mario Bermúdez has been invited as a guest choreographer by other major international companies such as the National Dance Company of Spain, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Hung Dance (Taiwan), Nuovo Balletto di Toscana, and the National Dance Company of Wales.
