Few people know that the most important hydraulic engineering work of the 19th century in Spain was carried out by women. Between 1874 and 1879, the construction of the Dique de la Campana in Ferrol was executed. There, a total of 200 women removed 245,000 cubic meters of earth and stone, transporting them in 58,000 baskets —each carried on their heads. They were known as “las estibadoras” (the dockworkers). Yet, for the same labor, they were paid less than men. On the 150th anniversary of the start of its construction, Nova Galega de Danza invited stage director Marta Pazos to create a tribute to this remarkable feat. Dique brings contemporary and traditional Galician dance into dialogue, creating a conversation that connects past and present. A play of colors, textures, and contrasts unfolds on stage, offering a visually striking and powerful experience.
